I don't often work with blue-toned reds, but now and then I make an exception. The burgundy (blue-toned red) fabric in this quilt is so beautiful, that although it isn't a good match with my rusty, yellow-toned red couch, it surely will work perfectly in someone's decor!
I used just 4 fabrics for this particular rag quilt: That gorgeous burgundy, a complementary teal (which is a brushed cotton, so it's extra soft and comfy!), and 2 complementary mustards. The finished size of this standard throw/lap sized quilt is approx. 45" by 57"; plenty big enough to cuddle up under on a cold evening while you read or watch television. I used matching fabrics for both the top and bottom layers of the blocks, so the back looks the same, except for the stars and ragging. Every other block in the light (mustard) rows is adorned with a raggedy star.
My rag quilts are always made from 100% cotton homespun plaids, and all are excellent, durable, quilt-shop quality fabrics (most are from my friends at Indo U.S. Sales, located in Illinois; a manufacturer of amazing quality fabrics. I especially love their homespun plaids, which are the best you can buy for great quality rag quilts!). Sandwiched within each 6" block is a layer of 100% cotton batting from Quilter's Dream (the best batting I've ever used!).
You'll also notice that I incorporate more machine quilting into my rag quilts than most; instead of a simple "X" design on each block, I use a cross-hatch design... not only resulting in twice the amount of quilting, but making my rag quilts far more durable! The layers of batting in my rag quilt blocks will not bunch or roll (which is what happens after only a few launderings of a rag quilt done with only the traditional "X" design).
For the star-appliques, I used 2 layers of fabric for extra fullness around the edges, and once again, I did an extra bit of machine quilting within the star to prevent bunching of the batting (a smaller star design).
Care Instructions: Simply wash your Autumn Comforts rag quilt in your washing machine in cold water with a touch of a mild detergent and fabric softener. Dry in your dryer on low heat, and be careful not to "over-dry." Take it out, and give it a good shake. That's it! My rag quilts are always excellent quality, durable, easy care, and the perfect complement to your primitive, country, and/or colonial decor.
